Stand-up Paddle Boarding Catalina

The nearshore waters of Catalina Island are my personal playground, and if you’re anything like me, then any excuse to go play will do… Stand-up paddle boards are a great way to explore Avalon Harbor, Lover’s Cove, and Casino Point. Rentals are easy to arrange, inexpensive, and accessible. But that’s not the best part.

The best part is that from your vantage point, standing upright looking down into the water, you see everything. While this might seem merely incidental, it’s actually what makes stand up paddle boarding such a great way to observe the action below the surface. It’s common to see bright orange Garibaldi and numerous other types of fish. Once you paddle outside the harbor, dolphins and harbor seals are in range, and just might pay you a visit.

Stand-up paddle boarding is the sport of kings. Originally, Hawaiin kings paddled their koa boards into giant waves, riding to shore, dragging their paddles in the water as a rudder. Today, paddle boarding has risen in popularity because it’s relatively easy to do, and you can catch and ride even the smallest waves. On Catalina Island, the rental shops are ready to get you in the water, so you can experience the sun, ocean, and the abundance of sea life like a Hawaiin king.
