Catalina’s Mini-Golf Course: Golf Gardens
Catalina’s mini golf course is a great place to spend a couple hours. Golf Gardens is located in Avalon just 1/2 block from the beach. This course is quite challenging, without the theme park gimmicky stuff you normally associate with mini golf. the grounds are landscaped beautifully and the facility is kept up in top condition. Each section of the course has informational signs giving you some interesting island history, or fun facts about Catalina’s flora and fauna.
During the summer the course is open in the evenings, and year round during the day, weather permitting. The managers here don’t provide strict hours of operation, so they may close early, stay open a little late, or shut down if bad weather is approaching.
Golf Gardens opened in 1973 and has become part of Catalina’s quirky identity, much like the Catalina Stables that were shut down to make way for the proposed Catalina Golf course expansion. The grounds cover about an acre and the course itself changes elevation several times, making it an exciting course to play. Highlights of the course include a “loop-the-loop” hole, a banked turn, a large square spiral, shortcut tunnels, and a few tricky uphill shots.
Bob and Larry, who run Golf Gardens, are two super friendly guys, who keep the course looking and running great. It’s a great family atmosphere, and the resident cats might pay you a visit and knock one in for you if you’re lucky! This course consistently gets 4 and 5 star reviews, I’ve yet to read a bad one. Families love it here, and it’s affordable, unlike a lot a lot of the other activities on the island.
