Catalina Island Kayaking

Catalina Island Kayaking is a fun and exciting way to experience the natural beauty of the island. The crystal clear blue waters under you reveal kelp forests, colorful Garibaldi, dolphins, lobster, and sometimes even a leopard shark. It’s common to see sea lions, dolphins, pelicans and bald eagles as you paddle the calm waters on Catalina’s lee side. Whether you bring your own kayak, rent one, or choose a guided kayak tour, you will find all of the information you’ll need on this page.

A favorite activity of my own is kayak camping on Catalina island. The stretch of coastline between Avalon and Two Harbors has about a dozen secluded boat-in-only campsites. You have to reserve in advance, because these secret spots are sought after by the few that know about them. Visit our Catalina Island maps page to see a detailed map of boat-in-only campsites. For my family, there’s just no better way to spend a few days together communing with nature than cruising along the shoreline with dolphins, sea lions, sea birds, and plenty of colorful Garibaldi just below.

All you need to go kayaking is a life preserver, sandals and shorts/bathing suit that can get wet, and sunscreen. On colder days, a windbreaker, beanie hat, or wetsuit is a good idea. Ask your kayak rental company what they provide, and also what’s provided on the guided tours.

The great thing about kayaking is that it’s easy! So, first-timers will have no trouble learning how to paddle and steer their kayaks. You can either rent a two person kayak, or a single person kayak. There are few rental places that offer hourly rentals – you will find info and contact information below.
