Catalina Island Jet Ski Adventures and Rentals

Jet skiing in the crystal clear blue water off the coast of Catalina, and even puttering around Avalon Harbor is a great way to spend an hour or two on your visit to Catalina Island. Jet Skis offer the excitement and freedom that few other watercraft can. Capable of taking one or two passengers, and reaching speeds of up to 50mph, Jet Skis are perfect for exploring the open ocean and nearshore water around Catalina. Expect to see dolphins, sea birds, sea lions, and other marine mammals on your excursion.

There are just a couple places that offer Catalina jet ski rentals on the island, so you should plan accordingly and book in advance, especially if your visit spans peak times of year for holiday travel. Either way – we recommend you book at least 3 days in advance to ensure a Jet Ski will be available when you arrive.

There are few regulations enforced by the rentals companies that you should be aware of. First of all, you must be 18 years old or more to drive. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Expectant women should not ride. Your rental manager will show you on a map where you are permitted to ride, which is a roughly 10 ten square mile area just left and right of the mouth of Avalon harbor.

Jet Ski to Catalina Island

A lot of people have been asking us if it’s possible to Jet Ski to Catalina Island from Newport Beach, San Pedro, Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Dana Point and other departure points along the coast. The short answer is – lots of people have done it – so yes.

We must warn you that this is a dangerous ride in the best conditions, and safety precautions need to be taken. Ocean conditions and visibility can change without notice, so be prepared for the worst. Bring a marine radio, GPS, extra fuel, wetsuit, compass, food, water, phone in waterproof case, etc. Use the buddy system!

The trip is about 22 miles from the mainland. Your average WaveRunner can tank up to about 17 gallons of fuel, which is enough for the trip, but we suggest extra fuel just to be safe. Also, fuel on the island is more expensive.

Here’s a video by a group that made the trip to Catalina Island by Jet Ski. Check our Catalina Island Explorer YouTube Channel for more Jet Ski to Catalina Island videos.

Once you get to Avalon, there are resources for mariners like gas readily available. Check out our Boat Map for services in Avalon harbor.
