Catalina Island Golf Course – Fees & Packages
Golfing on Catalina Island is a great way to spend a day or two. The course is challenging, requiring a wide range of clubs, set in a beautifully landscaped idyllic setting. More experienced golfers should bear in mind that things can move along at a leisurely pace as some golfers are there on honeymoon, or trying golf for the first time as part of their vacation. The course takes about 2 hours to complete.
For you pro’s there are a couple particularly challenging holes, like the par 3, 194 yard 7th hole which requires accuracy and precision on the drives as well as the approach. Everyone loves the elevated tee of 8th hole, however, for its panoramic views down to Avalon Harbor and across to Palos Verdes.
It’s worth noting that the Catalina Country Club shares the same address, one of the islands true fine dining establishments. The country club is open from 11:00am through dinner, and Sundays for brunch from 10:00am on through dinner. If you are planning a golf vacation on Catalina Island, the country club is a great place for drink or a meal. During the Catalina Jazz Fest, it’s a regular favorite venue for some great jazz.
About the Catalina Golf Course
Built by the Banning Brothers in 1882, the Catalina Island golf course was originally a three-hole course. In the very early 1900′s it was expanded with four new holes, and again in 1925 to a 9 hole course designed by Duncan Dunn, and yet again in 1929 to a full 18 hole tournament worthy course. During WWII, the course was not cared for and by around 1945, it was back to being 9 holes.
Today, the Catalina Island golf course is a 2100 yard, 9 hole course with two sets of tees for 18 hole play. The course features five par 4 holes and four par 3 holes. This historic course was once home to the Bobby Jones Invitational Golf Tournament, which ran from 1931-1955. The clubhouse features a fully stocked pro shop with Taylormade clubs available to rent, electric and pull carts, and a PGA certified Pro is always on hand to help you get the most out of your game. Near the pro shop you’ll find a practice green and driving net.
The course has been a home for many golfers who went on to greater fame, like Tiger Woods (infamy?), Craig Stadler, and Corey Pavin, who all played there as teenagers, as well as John Cook, Toni Seals, and Amy Alcott who have participated in tournaments there. The course itself is long and narrow, meandering through a beautiful canyon above Avalon, with beautiful ocean views. It’s common to see wild deer and hawks in the area, making the experience even more unique. The Catalina golf course is located near the horse stables about halfway (1 mile) up the hill towards the famous Wrigley Botanical Gardens.
Not many rules here, just enjoy an amazing and historic course in a beautiful setting, and oh yeah – no spikes allowed!
