Camping at Cabrillo (Large Groups OK)

The remote boat in only campsite of Cabrillo is located to the east of Gibraltar Beach, directly on the other side of the huge rocky point. It is a long sandy beach capable of accommodating multiple campsites and fairly large groups of 30 or more. For this reason, coupled with the opportunities for snorkeling, swimming and kayaking, it was used by the Boy Scouts for years.

The beach here is mostly cobblestone, with more sand towards the waters edge. The campsites are located on a large flat area just behind the beach with lots of good areas to hunker down without a giant rock or tree root to ruin your night.

Cabrillo is perfect for snorkeling, with an abundance of fish, including the ubiquitous orange Garibaldi, so don’t forget your snorkeling gear. It is also great for swimming, protected from the NW wind swells that can make some of the other boat in campsites a little rough. Hiking is also possible here, and there are a number of trails to explore. As with all of the campgrounds and campsites on Catalina, watch for rattlesnakes.

Cabrillo Campsites

There are four designated campsites at Cabrillo, capable of holding 6-8 campers each. For this reason, it’s a favorite destination for families, and larger groups. That can mean lots of kids on the beach, so if it’s a quiet, secluded cove you’re after, keep paddling.

Cabrillo Campsite B2

Cabrillo campsite B2 is the furthest east of the four campsites. Each campsite has a picnic table. Capacity: 6-8 campers. There is a large rock directly in front of B1 and B2 with an old ships mooring cleat embedded in the rock that is still holding. Snorkeling around the rock is excellent!

Cabrillo Campsite B1

Cabrillo campsite B1 is the second furthest east of the four campsites. Each campsite has a picnic table. Capacity: 6-8 campers. There is a large rock directly in front of B1 and B2 with an old ships mooring cleat embedded in the rock that is still holding. Snorkeling around the rock is excellent!

Cabrillo Campsite A1

Right in the middle of the beach – great swimming just out front. Each campsite has a picnic table. Capacity: 6-8 campers.

Cabrillo Campsite A2

The furthest west (and closest to Avalon) of the four campsites. Great swimming just in front. Each campsite has a picnic table. Capacity: 6-8 campers.
